Emily in Villeneuve-sur-Lot

On Thursday 3rd October 2024, we met Emily, our new language assistant. For one hour, Emily told us about her life and her country. We asked her some questions and this is what we found out:

Emily Garcia decided to work as an assistant in France to get more teaching experience. She has lived in South Carolina for 23 years. She lives in Greenville and there are lots of good restaurants and waterfalls. People in the area keep themselves busy by watching movies while going to restaurants or going to sporting events. Her favorite tradition is Thanksgiving because during this holiday her whole family gets together.

On weekends she likes shopping, cleaning, watching Netflix and having nice breakfasts. Typical foods in her area are Collard Greens, Cornbread, Crab rice and Fried Chicken. Her favorite places to visit in the USA are Philadelphia and Washington D.C. She enjoys listening to rock, rap and country music. Her favorite American TV shows are Gilmore Girls and The Office. At the moment, she’s watching The White Lotus, a very popular whodunnit series.

When she was in high school, she started classes at 7:30am, which is very early. French and American teachers must dress up. In high school, students dress comfortably. Be careful, though ! Stereotypes in American films and series are not necessarily true. American students end classes at 3:30pm. Sports clubs in America are very popular especially among students.Teenagers are always excited to watch American football games. As for school work, teachers in France and America are equally strict about lessons.

Coming to France, Emily was very surprised to see the quantity of ice cubes you get when you order a drink in a café (only three !!!) because in the U.S there are a lot more than in France . What she misses most is that there are plenty of restaurants open 24/7 in the US.

Emily also came to English Club on Tuesdays and was always very happy to have a chat with us. With her, we had quiz time, karaoke sessions and Just Dance fun time to unwind and let the steam off. It was great to play games and talk to her. One day, we talked about stereotypes.

Here are some of the stereotypes that American people have about French people: they don’t wash and they eat snails. Fancy that ! French people tend think that American people eat a lot and a lot of junk food and that they’re dumb. But Emily proved that this is absolutely not true.

We interviewed Emily and you can watch the whole interview on instagram @englishclubvsl . Emily told us that she travelled to Mexico but she was very young so she doesn’t remember much. This is the first time she has travelled to Europe and lived in France. During the break, she went to Paris and had a great time there.

Thank you Emily for joining us and spending time in Lycée Lot-et-Bastide with us to help us improve our English ! It was awesome to meet a genuine American woman. At first, it was a bit of a challenge to get used to her accent but we love it now !
